John von Neumann scrive l’articolo “First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC” descrive, ma in termini astratti non-operativi, il suo computer con programma memorizzato a bordo (e quindi modificabile dallo stesso computer come fossero dati). Le prime specifiche complete arriveranno con Alan Turing alla fine del 1945. Il EDVAC di von Neumann ha una CPU mentre il ACE di Turing ha le funzioni aritmetiche distribuite fra diverse unita’ hardware. George Dyson scrivera’: “The stored-program computer, as conceived by Alan Turing and delivered by John von Neumann, broke the distinction between numbers that mean things, and numbers that do things; our universe would never be the same.”
