Farmagosta, Cyprus. During negotiations for the Venetians’ surrender, something goes wrong. Mustafa’ reacts with senseless violence. Bragadin is imprisoned and subjected to a horrific ordeal for about ten days, involving torture and humiliation. The pasha has his ears and nose cut off, forces him to carry loads like beasts of burden and kiss the ground, and lifts him up a prison tree for all to see. Finally, on August 15th, he has him flayed alive. Eyewitness accounts say that Bragadin continues to ferociously insult the Turks until the very end. He yells at an imam who approaches him: “You dog, you traitor to God! You stupid, stupid beak!” and yells at Mustafa that if he were the victor, he would use his beard to “pull shit out of toilets.”
