Summer 1481

Otranto. Some Turkish embassies, seeing the Ottomans’ fading interest in holding Otranto, travel to Venice to propose to the Serenissima to occupy Otranto. The deal was extremely attractive to the Doge, as it would have avoided the much-feared siege in the Adriatic Sea. However, it would have unleashed the resentment of all the Italian powers against the Lion of St. Mark. The Venetians responded with a polite refusal.
