Napoleon continues to refuse to use the Guard to finish off the Russian army (he might have achieved a decisive victory, but on the other hand, the Guard will be essential to his retreat back to France). Kutuzov learns of the Russian army’s terrible losses, and the devastating losses among the senior officers (soldiers are easily replaced, but senior officers are not), and orders a retreat.
