Monteveglio Castle, in the Emilian Apennines, previously controlled by the Guelphs (Bolognese), falls through treachery to the Ghibellines (Modenese). It is the linchpin of Bologna’s defensive system. The castle is difficult to besiege, given the nature of the surrounding terrain. The Ghibellines no longer leave the initiative to their Guelph adversaries: it is time to attack Bologna.
