Modena. The Ghibelline commander Rainaldo d’Este has all his baggage and war implements moved to Castelvetro. During the night, he reaches Marano di Campiglio and crosses the Panaro River. In Bolognese territory, the army joins up with the other contingent coming from Poggio di Bazzano. The Este chronicle states, “the multitude of spears of the deployed army resembled a forest.” The Bolognese numbered approximately 30,000 infantry and 2,500 cavalry, compared to the Modenese 8,000 infantry and 2,500 cavalry. The Ghibellines are deployed on the Ziriberga Plateau, while the Guelphs have the Zappolino Castle behind them.
