Sunday morning. Lepanto, now Greece. Opposite lie the Christian fleet and the Ottoman-Turkish fleet, both divided into two wings and a central line. On the left are Barbarigo, with the Quirini to his right, and Shuluq Mehmet; in the center are Don Juan with his galleass Real, Cardona, Venier, and Marcantonio against Perteu and Ali’ Kapudan Pasha; on the right, the Doria against the corsair Uluc Ali’ (“Glasses” to the Italians). The Turks fall victim to the first bombardment of the galleas and, targeted in this way, return fire, thus firing too soon. The Real and the Kapudan Pasha’s galley, however, fire just before hitting each other. Forty thousand arquebus shots are unleashed in a matter of minutes.
