Sofia, Bulgaria. An alleged attack on Enrico Berlinguer in Sofia in 1973 emerged in 1991 (such as in the newspapers L’Unita’ and Panorama). It was a bizarre car accident that occurred in Sofia while the secretary of the Italian Communist Party, following a visit to Bulgaria, was heading to the airport to return to Italy. According to reconstructions, the collision was caused by a truck that suddenly found itself in the car’s path. Berlinguer, injured, managed to escape, but one of the car’s occupants later died from his serious injuries (probably the driver, although some sources suggest the interpreter instead). The other occupants were two prominent Bulgarian communist leaders: Boris Velchev and Konstantin Tellanov, who were also injured or injured. It was October 3, 1973, and Enrico Berlinguer was returning from meetings with top Bulgarian leaders, including the general secretary of the Communist Party, Todor Zhivkov. Following Macaluso’s statements, his wife Letizia confirmed that her husband had expressed suspicions that the accident had not been accidental.
