Modena publisher Fortunato Formiggini, known as Furmajun from Modena, threw himself from the Ghirlandina Tower to protest racial measures. On the morning of November 29, 1938, he threw himself from the Ghirlandina, the cathedral’s tower, falling onto a narrow patch of pavement that he himself, in one of his last letters, had ironically asked to be called, in his memory, al tvajol ed Furmajin, the Formaggino napkin, in the Modenese dialect: a plaque bearing this name today commemorates him.
