Yamamoto’s combined task force sailed from the assembly point at Hitokappu-Wan; leading the mighty formation was the gunboat Kunajiri, the aircraft carriers were Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, Hiryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku; also part of the group were the battleships Hiei, Kirishima, and the heavy cruisers Tone and Chikuma.
