El Alamein, Egypt. Montgomery unleashes the great “Supercharge” attack with 800 tanks and 360 guns simultaneously. These include Sherman, Grant, Valentine, Crusader, and Matilda tanks. The fighting continues throughout the night. The Panzer and Ariete divisions are now exhausted, but most of the tanks remaining on the battlefield are British. The Italian-German situation is far from rosy, and Rommel orders a retreat.
