Battle of Cape Matapan. Thanks to interceptions of the Italian Enigma code and the use of radar, the British surprise the Italian fleet off the coast of Greece and sink three cruisers and two destroyers, with over 2,000 sailors aboard, while capturing more than 1,000 others. The mighty battleship Vittorio Veneto (sister ship to the Littorio, Roma, and Impero, and comparable to the USS Missouri, Bismark, or Yamato) is also heavily damaged and must retreat to avoid being sunk.
