The McDonnell Douglas/Martin Marietta and North American Rockwell/General Dynamics consortiums have submitted their proposals for the Space Shuttle orbiter: both projects have in common the use of an aluminum alloy structure, protected by non-metallic thermal insulation material; the choice is dictated above all by the scarcity and excessive cost of titanium, which would have significantly lightened the orbiter, saving tons of tiles.
