Under the auspices of London, which thus sought to regain its credibility in the Arab world, the Arab League was founded in Cairo, an alliance of recently independent Arab states: Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and Transjordan. One of its main functions was to prevent the establishment of a Jewish state in the Palestinian territories.
