Milan. Austrian General Rath leads a battalion of grenadiers, and as he passes the Osteria di San Carlino, the wife of the innkeeper Costantino Beretta throws a flowerpot, which hits the general squarely in the head, knocking him off his horse. The general’s wound causes confusion, and the soldiers flee, some throwing away their rifles. The residents, incredulous, wait a few minutes before coming out and collecting the precious rifles.
