late August – early September 1860

Calabria, Basilicata, Campania: the army of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies is in complete disarray. The army practically ceases to exist, and thousands desert, wandering through the mountains to return home. The coastal forts surrender without being attacked. Cavour’s emissaries are undoubtedly active at this stage, trying to widen the gap between the Neapolitan army and the king. In particular, the finger is pointed at Pianell, Minister of War, and General Nunziante (who later became a general of the Italian Army). In this scenario, Garibaldi’s men advance up Italy in several groups by ship, steamboat, train, and on foot.
