Yugoslavia. The regular army dissolves, and two resistance groups form to fight against the invaders, primarily German and Italian. These are the Chetniks, led by Draza Mihailović (a former colonel who has decided to continue fighting), and the Communist Partisans, led by Josip Broz, Tito’s alias. The British initially sympathize with the Chetniks, but after intercepting communications with Enigma, they realize that the Chetniks are very close to the Italians, and begin to openly support Tito’s Communist Partisans, whom they consider more reliable. After the war, Tito rejects the alliance with Stalin’s USSR, maintaining a courageous neutrality that will prove crucial during the Cold War.
