Samarium is discovered by Paul Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran. The discovery occurs when the scientist observes impure samples of didymium (which later turns out to be composed of neodymium and praseodymium). A century later, samarium will be a component of some rare-earth magnets (although the most powerful are neodymium ones) used in servo motors.
