Battle of Custoza. First Italian War of Independence, between Piedmontese troops, led by Charles Albert of Savoy, and those of the Austrian Empire, commanded by Josef Radetzky. The two armies clashed at Custoza, near Verona, for control of the Veneto plains. After the victory at Goito and the capture of Peschiera, the path to the Quadrilateral was open to the Piedmontese army. However, for nearly two months, the slowness and indecisiveness of the Piedmontese commanders caused them to lose the advantage they had gained. The Austrian troops won the battle, and the Piedmontese were forced to retreat.
