The New York Times publishes a “Correction” to its 1920 article ridiculing Robert Goddard and his experiments with liquid-fueled rockets aimed at deep space. At the time, the Times declared Goddard’s claim that his rocket could function in the vacuum of space ridiculous. In fact, we now know that it works BETTER in space than in the atmosphere. In the 1969 Correction, the Times wrote: “It is now established that a rocket can function in the vacuum of space as well as in the atmosphere. The Times regrets the error.”
