The Venetian Pietro II Candiano and his army landed at Capodistria, probably the largest commercial emporium in the area, forcing the inhabitants to sign a promise pledging to defend the Venetians from any abuse, to judge cases pending against them fairly, and to donate one hundred amphorae of wine annually to the Doge; all as a sign of gratitude to those who had assured them protection and commercial privileges. At the same time, the Doge imposed an embargo on the region.
