The feigned escape, a legacy of the Genghis Khanite Mongols, triggers the ambush. The Neapolitan knights are routed. Giovanni da Cremona dies in battle, while Francesco de Monti and Giovanni Piccinino are captured alive. Alvise Gentile takes refuge in Minervino, where he is later captured.
