The submarine Hunley, carrying Lieutenant Dixon and six other volunteers, leaves Charleston harbor and, joined by the powerful 1,240-ton Union cruiser Housatonic, manages to sink it. The submarine is engulfed by the wave and sinks. This is the first sinking of a ship by a submarine in history.
