CL Sholes created the first QWERTY typewriter; it had a flat carriage and the hammers struck the paper from underneath; if they got stuck, you wouldn’t notice until the end of the document; to avoid this, the keys were moved, initially in alphabetical order – you can still recognize it in the central row DFGHJKL – so as to slow down typing by placing the letter A at the left end on the awkward little finger.
