Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake by the Inquisition for denying the sanctity of Jesus Christ, ecclesiastical authority, and for teaching Copernican ideas; he also predicted that there were infinite worlds in the universe with intelligent life, some, perhaps, with civilizations superior to that of humans.
