Marv, Central Asia. Tolui, Genghis Khan’s youngest son, occupies the city and, using a procedure learned from his father, forces all citizens to gather immediately outside the walls and exterminates them all. Each soldier must kill at least four people, and Muslims are also used, forced to kill schoolchildren. Hundreds of thousands of victims die. Only 5,000 manage to escape, but are later captured and killed by rearguard forces.
