The Piedmontese parliament approved participation in the Crimean War. The mission was commanded by Alfonso La Marmora. Within a few weeks, 18,000 men were ready under the command of Giovanni Durando and Ardingo Trotti, and the brigades under the command of Manfredo Fanti, Enrico Cialdini, and Rodolfo di Montevecchio.
