Shuttle mission STS-61 is launched, carrying astronauts Richard Covey, Kenneth Bowersox, Kathryn Thornton, Claude Nicollier, Jeffrey Hoffman, Story Musgrave, and Thomas Akers. The goal is highly ambitious: to repair the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Solar panels, electronics, and gyroscopes are replaced, and corrective optics are applied. Everything works perfectly. It’s a resounding success. Without this Shuttle mission (or without the Shuttle program), the HST would have become useless space junk, and perhaps the end of NASA. Instead, it transforms into an opportunity for redemption and a boost for the future, demonstrating the ability to operate large and complex structures in space for extended periods. All of this paves the way for the upcoming construction of the International Space Station (ISS).
