Bell Labs, NY: The demonstration for colleagues hosted by Shockley, Brattain, and Bardeen involves amplifying a voltage more than 300 times using two gold electrodes pressed against a specially prepared germanium surface. Some Bell executives then put on headphones so they can directly hear the amplification of the human voice, achieved with the first solid-state amplifier.
