Ardennes. The men of the 101st American Airborne Division, besieged in the snow-covered town of Bastogne, receive German officers demanding their surrender. The division commander, General McAuliffe, writes the response on a piece of paper, which is handed to the Germans. Four letters: NUTS (or “balls”). The Germans look confusedly at the American soldier who hands them the paper and ask what it means. He replies: “In plain English? Go to hell!”
