Gulf of Tonkin, Indochina. A second attack on an American naval vessel by North Vietnam is reported to President Johnson. The first could have been a mistake, but two were not, so a military escalation is decided. It will be discovered later that the second attack may not have actually occurred, and that it was an overreaction by the American military to an unknown factor.
