Italy. The Caproni Campini No. 1 was the first known jet-powered aircraft to fly at the time. Piloted by Mario De Bernardi, it flew near Milan. The compressor, unlike modern jet engines, was driven by a 900-hp piston engine made by Isotta Fraschini. The true first jet-powered flight, however, was that of the Henkel 178 a year earlier, but at the time it was classified and therefore unknown to the general public.
