Calabria. Caught between Cosenz’s column descending from Aspromonte and Garibaldi’s march from Reggio, the Bourbons surrendered on August 23. Garibaldi advanced on horseback toward his defeated adversaries and reminded them that they were sons of Italy. He promised a warm welcome to those who wished to join his people, but almost all preferred to return to their homes. When the Medici column, which had remained in Sicily until then, landed near Nicotera, Garibaldi’s men flooded into Calabria.
