Syria. Khalid al-Asaad, the internationally renowned archaeologist in charge of the Roman ruins of Palmyra, refused to lead Islamic State (Daesh/ISIS) terrorists to the archaeological site and, after being held captive for days, was beheaded in a public square in front of a crowd and hung from a traffic light, his severed head between his feet, his glasses still on. The photo was published by the Islamic State on social media. He was 83 years old and had been retired since 2003.
