Belgrade. The Germans build a single radio broadcast station that can be heard by all soldiers at the front. It is built in Belgrade and inaugurated on August 18, 1941, at 9:50 PM. At the end of the news broadcast, an old 78 rpm record by a little-known singer with a passionate voice named Lale Andersen is put on the gramophone. It’s called “Lili Marleen,” and it tells the story of a young prostitute who waits every night for her soldier by the light of a streetlamp. To date, the song has sold only 700 records.
