Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt meet on the island of Newfoundland and sign the Atlantic Charter; this is the foundation of the new world order that sees the United States as the new superpower and the British as a close ally; Clause 3, which calls for the self-determination of peoples, is accepted by Churchill only after long discussions and will lead to the dissolution of the British Empire; Clause 4, desired by Churchill, calls for the elimination of the Nazi threat (the United States is not yet at war with Germany or even Japan) and will be judged by Hitler as proof of a Jewish plot and will give him the impetus to decide to implement the Final Solution (i.e., the Holocaust of the Jews) immediately (and not after the war as initially planned); the first gas tests will begin in Auschwitz as early as September.
