C.G. Witt of the Urania Observatory in Berlin discovers an asteroid with a peculiar orbit, not part of the Main Asteroid Belt, as it remains within the orbit of Mars. It is 433 Eros. A century later, it will be the target of the American probe NEAR, which will also land on it!
