Russian space enthusiasts have identified the remains of the Soviet Mars 3 probe, the first to land on Mars on December 7, 1971, in some ultra-high-resolution (25cm) photos from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The probe transmitted for only 14 seconds, and the parachute is clearly visible, as are the retrorockets and heat shield.
