Calabria. 2:00 AM. Reggio Calabria is attacked: Garibaldi, with Missori’s forces, approaches from the eastern hills and encounters no resistance. The main body advances toward the city center and encounters strong resistance when it reaches the cathedral square; Bixio, the column’s commander, is wounded. Garibaldi intervenes from above, cutting off the retreat of the Bourbon outposts, and Reggio is taken. Bourbon forces remain in the region and attempt to march on Reggio but are repelled. Meanwhile, Cosenz disembarks from Capo Faro with a thousand volunteers between Scilla and Bagnara and advances toward Aspromonte to avoid being caught between the garrisons of the two fortresses. There are still 4,000 Bourbon soldiers in Villa San Giovanni, but the commanders’ distrust and the soldiers’ final discouragement render any resistance futile.
