The Milanese refugees see columns of soldiers arriving with waving flags. They are the army of Bergamo, followed by that of Brescia and then Cremona, to protect the citizens returning to a destroyed and abandoned Milan. Neither the Pavia nor the imperial forces dare challenge the communes this time, and the Milanese are able to build field fortifications.
