600 BC

Native to Asia Minor, the cherry tree (Prunus avium L.) spread to Egypt by the 7th century BC and later to Greece (it is mentioned by Theophrastus in the 3rd century). The first evidence of its presence in Italy dates back to the 2nd century BC, when Varro described its grafting in detail. Later, Pliny the Elder described 10 varieties in his “Naturalis Historia.”
