The Roman architect Vitruvius describes in his Architectura a machine called an aeolipile. It consists of a hollow sphere filled with water and two pipes emerging at perpendicular angles. If the sphere is heated until the water boils, the resulting steam causes the sphere to rotate. About a century later, Hero of Alexandria built one. It was the first steam engine. But it was used only for entertainment purposes.
