Native to the mountainous regions of Turkey, Iran, and India, the onion (Allium cepa) has been known since ancient times: in fact, the Egyptians were already regularly eating it in 3200 BC. It was first introduced to the Mediterranean basin by the Babylonians and Assyrians, and later by the Greeks.
