group of students at Appalachian State University scientifically understands why Diet Coke turns into a geyser when it comes into contact with Mentos candies: the candies’ porous surface acts as a catalyst, like a net capturing the bubbles dissolved in the Coke, which join together to form increasingly larger bubbles. This is perhaps the pinnacle of bubble science (a geyser up to 6 meters high!)… All that remains is to also explain the phenomenon of sonoluminescence (bubbles that suddenly disappear, emitting flashes of colored light) when a Polo candies are chewed in a dark substance.
