T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey built what they called a “DC machine with solid-state commutation.” This was the first modern brushless DC motor. More than two decades later, the advent of fast and efficient IGBT transistors and powerful rare-earth permanent magnets (first samarium and then neodymium) paved the way for brushless AC motors with sinusoidal control.
