Seaborg discovered cobalt-60, a radiation source later widely used in medicine to treat tumors. A year earlier, brothers John (a doctor of medicine) and Ernest (a physicist) Lawrence had decided to treat their mother, who was suffering from uterine cancer, with X-rays in Ernest Lawrence’s laboratory. The tumor disappeared. Their mother, then 67, lived to 83. Radiotherapy and cobalt therapy were born.
