Stalin’s purges hit the Red Army’s top ranks: three of the five high marshals, 98 of the 100 members of the Supreme Military Council, 48,000 middle- and high-ranking officers, 13 of the 15 corps commanders, and eight of the nine admirals were executed. Never before had a country suffered such heavy losses in peacetime.
