In the USSR, GULag deportees built the Belomorkanal (or Stalin Canal) that connects the White Sea to the Baltic Sea; it is 244 km long and only 2 years of forced labor were used to build it in unimaginable working conditions; the Panama Canal was built by the Americans in 28 years and is only 80 km long.
