Umberto Nobile, embittered by Italy’s attitude toward him, resigned from the Air Force in 1929. Now out of favor with the Fascist regime, he left Italy in 1931 to participate in the Arctic expedition of the icebreaker Malyghin. The following year, he moved to the Soviet Union, where he collaborated on the USSR W6 OSOAVIAKHIM airship project (which crashed in February 1938). He returned in November 1936 and emigrated to the United States in 1939, where his design skills were widely utilized. From February 1943, he was in Spain. He returned to Italy after July 25, 1943, and in 1945 he requested and was granted reinstatement in the Air Force, being promoted to the rank of major general of the aeronautical engineers.
