Crete. The Phaistos Disk, a circular clay disk covered in spiral script, was sculpted, with 241 very elaborate signs or letters, evidently printed on the clay. It was discovered in 1908. The meaning of these signs remains a mystery, as nothing else of its kind has been found. Furthermore, being dated to 1700 BC, it is by far the earliest printed document in human history. It was likely used as many as 45 different molds (types).
